Campaign Promises on Ending the War in Iraq Now Muted by Reality

Campaign Promises on Ending the War in Iraq Now Muted by Reality on nytimes.com.

On the campaign trail, Senator Barack Obama offered a pledge that electrified and motivated his liberal base, vowing to “end the war” in Iraq.

But as he moves closer to the White House, President-elect Obama is making clearer than ever that tens of thousands of American troops will be left behind in Iraq, even if he can make good on his campaign promise to pull all combat forces out within 16 months.

Gee, that's a surprise.

So, Obama isn't even going to implement the agreement that Bush negotiated to completely withdraw from Iraq?

The lesson is, for anyone who wants these wars to end, voting Democrat is NOT the answer.

The other part I don't get at all is the way Obama keeps saying he'll withdraw 'combat brigades' or 'combat troops', but still leave tens of thousands of other troops behind.

First, the phrases like 'combat brigades' and 'combat troops' just smell like weasly phrases designd to mislead.

Second, what would this look like? We'd leave thousands of American servicemen stationed in a violent country. And we'd pull out all the 'combat troops'? There would still be Shite-Sunni-Kurdish infighting and struggles for powr. There would still be people there who would hate Americans after the last 20 years and some 2 million Iraqis dead. And in the midst of that we'd leave thousands of American service people without the protection of combat troops?

Doesn't make any sense to me. Which tells me that its likely I'm being misled. Both the weasly language with the very specific phrases that are repeated like a team of lawyers and political tricksters have had a committee and agreed that this is what to say to mislead ... and the irrationality of the end state that's being describe ... point to that sort of conclusion.
